Program standard

Safeguarding is part of the operating plan.

Sessions are taught by the TechCommons student instructor team and supervised by responsible adults throughout the program.

Public operating framework · Final launch assignments must be completed before enrolment opens

Safeguarding commitments

In-person sessions use the following minimum arrangements:

  • At least two adults present
  • Approximately one supervising adult for every ten students in the large class
  • No unsupervised one-to-one situations
  • Adult supervision during arrival, teaching, breaks and collection
  • Emergency contacts accessible during each session
  • Venue evacuation information and a first-aid kit available
  • A designated first-aid-qualified adult assigned before the program launches

The student instructors are under 18. Adult supervision is provided by parents of the instructors. TechCommons does not state that every supervising adult has a Working With Children Check; the final position for regular adult supervisors must be determined before enrolment.

Parent and guardian responsibilities

  • Provide accurate parent or guardian contact information.
  • Share practical information needed for safe participation without sending unnecessary medical detail.
  • Tell TechCommons about an authorised alternative collection person in writing.
  • Arrive for collection at the published time and follow venue instructions.
  • Keep TechCommons informed if the student will be absent.

Student behaviour expectations

Students are expected to communicate respectfully, use devices safely and appropriately, avoid harassment, avoid deliberate damage and not repeatedly disrupt other students’ learning.

Responses are graduated: a clear reminder, a warning and parent or guardian contact where necessary. A student may be removed from a session when required for immediate safety. Repeated or serious conduct will be discussed with the parent or guardian before participation continues.

Arrival and collection

A parent or authorised adult signs each student in and out. Written authorisation is required for an alternative collection person. Students do not leave unaccompanied unless written permission is in place.

Final room, entrance, arrival and collection instructions will be published after the venue booking is confirmed.

Photography and student work

Photography, video, quotations and publication of student work each require separate optional consent. Participation in a class does not depend on providing publicity consent. Consent choices can be withdrawn for future use by contacting TechCommons.

Incidents and concerns

A relevant incident is recorded on the same day. The parent or guardian is notified, and serious safety concerns are escalated to the appropriate authority. The final incident escalation owner must be assigned before enrolment opens.

Report a concern

Email techcommons.org@gmail.com with “Safeguarding concern” in the subject. If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services.

Before public enrolment

The following roles and decisions are mandatory launch checks: designated responsible adult, first-aid-qualified adult, supervising-adult roster, final Working With Children Check position for adult supervisors, and incident escalation owner.
